A few days ago in Orkney, where the extraordinary solitaire engagement rings are designed and created, we’ve been blasted by the most powerful winds of the year. Electricity was lost to quite a few homes and the radio transmitter on the summit of one of our hills has been struck dumb by lightning. Swells and substantial tides whipped up by the harsh gales means ferries in between the islands and mainland Scotland have been postponed. So we have had no Sunday papers shipped to the islands because the battering winds halted the boats.

Squalls of 130mph were recorded on Sunday early morning on Hammars Hill where wind generators are located. However the storms were too fierce for the wind generators to run. That’s equal to a grade 1 storm! Even at ground level there have been winds of 80mph at Kirkwall airport.

Fortunately we don’t have many trees to be uprooted and flung all over the roads or on top of houses. And those structures have very stout walls and large pieces of stone on the roofs which are cemented tightly down. Other regions on mainland Scotland bore the impact of the weather too. The Cairngorm Mountains were hit while at lower levels there was flooding on several roads as rain contributed to the winter woes.

Of course we expect to have winter season weather up here in Orkney but it is still little fun whenever we receive a battering. Certainly the first two thirds of November were noticeably warm with plants still flourishing and birds getting confused and building nests and courting. They must surely have got the message now, that they were being a bit hasty.
